1 in 7 people on earth rely on aquatic species as an important part of their diet and/or income. Today, 90% of all fish stocks are either overfished or fished at their maximum capacity, causing untold damage to marine and freshwater ecosystems. Meanwhile, aquaculture which is the fastest growing segment in the entire agriculture sector, presents a major opportunity to meet growing food security challenges, but it is generally hindered by poor environmental performance which is exacerbating the planet’s biodiversity crisis.

Transforming how we obtain fish, crustaceans, mollusks and seaweed requires the development of methods that can provide profitable calories, promote healthy ecosystems, and restore natural value and animal stocks. A Blue Revolution is on the horizon.

OUR OFFER

Taking a Founding Analyst role at DSV is a fantastic opportunity to develop concepts for, and launch your own startup. Working with us, you’ll have access to the systems and environment to guide your thinking. We’ll provide you with a salary whilst you start your own company, and moreover, will support you build a founding team, find early data to land your first customers and to secure investors.

The role transitions over time, with you initially working in an Analyst role, scoping out your own project opportunities and working with a dedicated Sector expert team at DSV to identify which could become companies. You will focus on mapping out the constraints and limitations currently leading to a lack of innovation in the Sector, and build out high performance, multidisciplinary teams to augment your own capabilities and develop proof-of-concept IP in the lab, with access to the Roslin Innovation Centre at the University of Edinburgh. After a 9 month period we will support you in taking the role of CEO or CTO of one of the companies we design together.

Compared to other “Entrepreneur in Residence”- type programmes, DSV is friendly to individuals with no previous founder experience and joining DSV comes with a commitment from us to support your company to make a real impact in the market. No prior idea or IP required.

 

The role is part of the Food & Agriculture Science Transformer (FAST) programme conducted between Deep Science Venture’s and the Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh, meaning that you can be based remotely, in London, or Edinburgh, where you will have access to a world-leading agricultural, financial and technical ecosystem.  

who should apply

The ideal candidate will have expertise and work experience in the wild fishing or aquaculture industry, with expertise across some of the following technical domains:

• Freshwater, near-shore or offshore aquaculture and husbandry

• Breeding or farming of finfish, macroalgae, crustacean or bivalve shellfish species

• Marine animal or plant biotechnology

• Seafood, fishing or seaweed farming techniques and technologies

• Offshore engineering, robotics and system automation

• Aquaculture feed formulation, probiotics, prebiotics and microfeed formulation

• Microbiome consortia, methanogen and metabolomics expertise

• Marine or aquatic conservation

• Bioprocess engineering, genomics, synthetic biology, and blue bioeconomy
