Associate: Leading New Opportunity Discovery in Agriculture

Building ventures in Restorative Cultivation and aligning Agriculture with Biodiversity.

About the role

As an Associate you will work in close partnership with the Associate Director for Agriculture and our current or future agri sector Founders focusing on systemic analysis or “scoping”, as we call it, of opportunity areas (OAs) for new venture development, identifying the sort of technologies and ventures that should exist but don’t.

While your main focus will be on opportunity analysis, you’ll be involved across all core functions of venture development, including recruitment and team building, business development, fundraising and portfolio management to quickly develop a broad understanding of the scope of all activities within the business.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

● Optimise DSV’s existing opportunity areas (OAs) in the sector supporting the Associate Director with research and analysis for venture development;

● Research and identify potential new OAs for the sector;

● Support team building and recruitment of multidisciplinary founder-type scientists across all live OAs;

● Support any current and/or future Founders on concept and/or commercial development in DSV’s existing areas from idea generation to investment;

● Support fundraising and business development efforts for the sector.

 

About you

KEY REQUIREMENTS

●   Deep technical understanding in biology (plant and animal or just plant or ocean/marine), ecology, agronomy or related agricultural discipline e.g. land management, food science etc. Experience in engineering is a plus e.g. industrial machinery and systems, robotics etc.;

●  You’ll likely have done a PhD in any of (or similar): plant or molecular biology, biological systems, entomology, agronomy;

●  Demonstrated interest in applied science/translation biology. Interest in early stage innovation and commercialisation is a plus, ideally with experience working in startups / VC and/or Analyst type roles;

●  Demonstrated interest in regenerative agriculture, blue economy and/or decarbonisation;

●  Demonstrated level of achievement, taking own initiative and delivering outcome-oriented projects from start to finish. You make things happen.

AnaPostdoctoral gene therapy, genome editing and biotechnology expert, and national and international research awardee in Animal Science on animal stem cell transplantation. Working on reshaping pollination systems by adapting cutting edge reproductive techniques, that she pioneered in vertebrates, to pollinating insect species.

DanielBioengineer experienced with agricultural technologies, machine learning and a beekeeper. Daniel is an award-winning entrepreneur who has raised ~$240,000 from awards and grants for commercial projects in Chile. Working on identifying means to successfully pollinate crops that cannot be easily targeted with honeybees. 

Toby: PhD-level plant biotechnologist experienced in genetic engineering, disease resistance and bioinformatics. Formerly worked at the Millenium Seed Bank at Kew Royal Botanical Gardens. Working on reducing pressure on forests by applying proven indoor  environmental technologies in new habitats or systems.

David: Plant scientist and mycologist, working on monitoring and utilising mycorrhizal fungi to enhance ecosystem development and increase the amount of atmospheric carbon that forest ecosystems can sequester.

Miguel: MBA + PhD-level entomologist, working on the technical aspects of the fly domestication and field performance to help growers by increasing their yields.
