Towards an optimal Agri sector: Restorative Cultivation

About the role

We’re looking for someone to take on venture opportunity discovery work in the Agri sector globally. You will be responsible for the research and development of sub-sector level theses, systemically evaluating some of the hardest, most pressing challenge areas – from animal aquaculture to zoonotic biosecurity – interviewing experts across academia and industry, and driving the allocation of resources, both capital and talent towards projects that have the potential to turn into £Bn ventures.

You will build a portfolio of high priority opportunity areas (OAs) in the agri sector, and drive the recruitment process to identify and select diverse, multidisciplinary and impact-driven founder-type scientists and help them develop new company and technology concepts from the idea stage to team-building and obtaining investment.

It’s essentially an opportunity to build your own portfolio of science-driven, scalable ag-tech startups, backed by our funding, our expertise in venture development and sourcing, and attracting entrepreneurial technical talent. 

You will also work closely with our Associate Director for Agriculture to identify key strategic partners for each of the OAs and drive collaborations across multiple stakeholders to help accelerate the venture development work in the sector.

 

About you

The role requires sufficient breadth and depth of insight across agri related fields both in terms of the science and industry dynamics. First-hand scientific research experience is ideal, while actual experience working across the food system is a must e.g. growing, harvesting, processing etc.

You’ll have a background in:

●  Biology (plant and animal or just plant or ocean/marine), ecology, agronomy or related agricultural discipline e.g. land management, food science etc. Experience in engineering is a plus e.g. industrial machinery and systems, robotics etc.;

●  Science / R&D / innovation and commercialisation or policy;

●  Regenerative agriculture, blue economy and/or decarbonisation.

Personality:

More than anything we’re looking for you to bring a vision of how you would drive the development of the sector, the current constraints and how to overcome them, an eye for opportunity and the founder type mindset to bring together the right people to make it happen.

Remi: Founding Analyst, Animal Aquaculture. Postdoctoral level molecular biologist experienced in the genetic basis of disease resistance in aquaculture species. Pioneered genome editing in model fish species, and formerly worked on fish farms. Joining FAST in January 2021, Remi’s work will explore improvements to finfish and shellfish aquaculture sustainability and yields.

Ana: FAST Founding Analyst, Pollinator Reinforcement. Postdoctoral gene therapy, genome editing and biotechnology expert, and national and international research awardee in Animal Science on animal stem cell transplantation. Ana is reshaping pollination systems by adapting cutting edge reproductive  techniques, that she pioneered in vertebrates, to pollinating insect species.

Daniel: FAST Founding Analyst, Pollinator Reinforcement. Bioengineer experienced with agricultural technologies, machine learning and a beekeeper. Daniel is an award-winning entrepreneur who has raised ~$240,000 from awards and grants for commercial projects in Chile. Daniel is now identifying means to successfully pollinate crops that cannot be easily targeted with honeybees. 

Toby: FAST Founding Analyst, Controlled Environments. PhD-level plant biotechnologist experienced in genetic engineering, disease resistance and bioinformatics. Formerly worked at the Millenium Seed Bank at Kew Royal Botanical Gardens. Toby’s work  focuses on reducing pressure on forests by applying proven indoor  environmental technologies in new habitats or systems.
