building the next generation of climate ventures

Our partnership with the Grantham Foundation and Stripe

To avert the impending climate catastrophe and meet our climate targets, we need a diverse set of synergistic technology companies, collaboratively bringing together a range of technological and commercial innovations. To deliver on this, DSV will create up to 12 new companies, in a new partnership with the Grantham Environmental Trust, which will provide expertise and investment as a founding investor in all companies, and Stripe – the global tech company – will be the first client. Stripe have committed to pay each venture created $500,000 up front to capture and store carbon, that meet their criteria and then a further $1 million if they meet performance milestones.

We’re hiring 3 x Founding Analysts (paid, full-time fixed contract) – one for each of the three opportunity areas below – to work with us for 9-12 months and drive the venture design & development process with the aim of spinning-out at least one venture that you’ll then become the CEO or CTO of after the investment and incorporation.

Why us?

Our method significantly reduces the risk of starting a new venture

• Having worked in venturing, R&D and tech transfer, our team understands that upside can be maximised and risk minimised when world experts collaborate to combine well-proven components into radical products and services. DSV has built more spin-outs than 85% of the UK universities.

• We do not start with IP/research that’s developed by a particular institution (and is “in search” for an application), but instead develop technical plans in-house and then partner with the best institutes for each opportunity area. By now, over 20 world-leading institutes are working on components of approaches developed at DSV.

• Our Founding Analysts undertake an unmatched due diligence process – enabled by proprietary software – consisting of >1500 hours of research per area, interviewing on average 76 experts across academia and industry before selecting which approaches or venture concepts to pursue further.

• We have proprietary software supporting identification of co-founders and advisors with exceptionally targeted, and, often one-of-a-kind, mix of technical as well as commercial expertise. 1000+ profiles are scanned per second selecting for, what we call, “founder-type” characteristics.

• Our partnership with the Grantham Foundation gives you the opportunity to work with one of the most established and experienced players in the climate space.

We have an impeccable track record

• 100% of our Energy portfolio have received follow-on funding via grants and/or private investment in addition to DSV’s investment

• Since we started in 2017, our portfolio company survival rate is 88% and since 2018 (when we refined our model) we have a 100% venture survival rate (!)

• > 30 companies built in 4 years and > £140m portfolio value created

• We have a 94% conversion between technical plans developed within the first 12 months at DSV and proof-of-concept work (post-investment)

• 18 months on average to company incorporation and TRL 4

We can offer what others can't

• An opportunity thesis – we’ve already identified opportunities for venture creation. You don’t need an idea or a pitch for a technical concept to apply

• Sector specific expertise – each Founding Analyst is teamed up with an Associate Director for the sector at DSV to guide the venture development journey, and can tap into our existing community of 300+ members (Founders, Advisors, Industry Partners etc.)

• Access to DSV’s proprietary talent and knowledge graphs

• £250k pre-seed investment at company inception

• 80% equity ownership of the new company at inception between you and your Co-Founder(s)

• £2,916 monthly salary (on a consultancy contract basis)

• You can work remotely (from anywhere) or relocate to UK on the Innovator Visa or Start-up Visa endorsed by DSV

DSV ON MY CLIMATE JOURNEY PODCAST

We teamed up with My Climate Journey to share our story and explain the urgency for venture creation in climate. There simply aren’t enough successful companies being built to address climate change. This is not because of a lack of opportunities, but rather because of a variety of structural challenges that we explore in this episode. Learn how Mission Zero Technologies were built, what Supercritical are up to, what our plans are for building in the energy sector and how we collaborate with mission aligned partners to work backwards from desired outcomes to form a team, to form intellectual property, technology, products and business models from scratch based on what has failed and what succeeded in the past.

Episode 171: A new way to build companies with Deep Science Ventures’ Founding Director, Dominic Falcão

FAQ
What's the application process?

We review applications as they come in and prioritise candidates that best meet the technical domain expertise requirements.

Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to respond to everyone within a short timeframe, but we’ll do our best to notify you as soon as possible if we think your profile matches one or more opportunities available at DSV.

Can I join part-time?

The Founding Analyst roles are full-time, unless you’ve given your notice and still have a few weeks or months that you need to dedicate to your former employer / prior commitments.

Can I join remotely?

Yes, as long as you are willing to consider relocating after the initial 9-12 months once the new venture is incorporated, unless you are already based in an ecosystem or a cluster relevant to the success of the venture that you’re building.

If I develop something as part of DSV, who owns the IP?

The IP developed as part of the project will temporarily be held by DSV and assigned to the new company on formation. This is to avoid unnecessary conflict between founders as to who came up with what during their time at DSV.

Any required background IP owned by research councils / charities / universities may be licensed via normal negotiation with those institutions. Where foreground IP is developed with a university, terms will be agreed as part of the research contract with that university.

Who funds DSV in the first place?

DSV is a privately owned company funded by high net-worth individuals and supported by mission-aligned industry partners.
