by launching a science company.
Heat production represents a third of greenhouse gases produced in Europe, from heating homes to heat used in industrial processes. Decarbonising this contribution will be vital to achieving a net-zero carbon economy by 2050.
The low carbon heat opportunity area at DSV is led by Dr Lorenzo Tocci. He has determined the key constraints holding back the transition away from hydrocarbon heating sources and is now looking for a team of scientists/engineers who want to be entrepreneurs and turn ideas into reality.
our offer
We provide a low-risk opportunity to experience scientific entrepreneurship first-hand, before taking the leap as a full-time cofounder. We’ll first engage with you on an online/remote basis to get to know you better (and for you to get to know us), followed by an opportunity to join full-time as a cofounder, earning a stipend until the project reaches our investment criteria. At this point we’ll invest £50k to build the technical proof-of-concept, with up to £450k in follow-on funding available.
Our network of industry and funding partners ensures that teams in our portfolio get unfair access to pilot trials, partnerships and additional funding.

  • An energy utility
  • OEM
  • A heat-intensive industry

OR

a PhD focusing on one or more of the key technologies below:

  • High-temperature heat pumps
  • Thermal energy storage
  • Heat batteries
  • Phase change materials
  • Waste heat recovery
  • Building physics modelling

Masters in Engineering/Physics with 3+ years work experience at either one of:

About Lorenzo

Lorenzo Tocci is a Mechanical Engineer with a passion for clean tech and Artificial Intelligence. After realizing his career as a tennis player was far from being successful, he decided to put his effort in studying ways to mitigate climate change. Lorenzo holds a PhD in optimisation of waste heat recovery systems by means of machine learning techniques and operations research. He has over four years of experience working for an early-stage waste heat recovery systems startup as their Director of Product Development. At Deep Science Ventures, his effort is focused on identifying opportunities for building “holy grail” ventures that will enable transition away from carbon-based heat production, with particular focus on the electrification of heating and cooling.
