Regenerate agroecosystems through climate-intelligent investing

Sustainable management of agriculture land can be a significant part of the climate solution: for example, the soil carbon pool could sequester up to 5.5 Gt of CO2e per year. But, without a science-based approach to measuring the climate and natural capital performance of land-related assets, it is impossible for investors to accurately assess the risk-return-impact tradeoffs or to optimize for both ecosystem/climate services (e.g. soil carbon sequestration, water quality/use, or biodiversity) and economic services (agriculture productivity).

Investors also want to reorient capital towards sustainable assets; for example as asset owners with US$37 trillion in assets under management have commitments to align with global climate and/or biodiversity targets, and the new EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) requires additional reporting on climate and nature, but existing ESG investment tools don’t use science-based performance measurement or classification approaches, and land-level assessment and verification standards are far too complex for investors and suffer from limited uptake by companies. As the 2030 deadlines approach quickly for global agreements such as the Paris Agreement and the SDGs, interest in solutions for companies and investors is growing at a rapid pace.

 

Our approach

We will fill this growing market gap by combining science-based measurement models with advances in remote sensing and computation to hugely simplify climate and natural capital performance measurement of financial assets linked to land. By incorporating the latest developments in biophysical modeling, remote sensing datasets on land use, soil, water, and climate, and data science we will allow any user to quickly and easily estimate the climate and natural capital footprints of a wide range of investment assets, as well as use optimization features to better assess the impacts of management practices on both financial and environmental performance.

Climate, natural capital, and biodiversity footprints of assets have many investor applications. They can be used for mandatory or voluntary disclosures, improved portfolio decision-making (asset allocation, manager selection), improved risk management, or to engage with portfolio companies on emissions reductions pathways. Our insights will enable investors to ensure portfolio alignment with climate or nature targets or taxonomies, the creation of new, science-based ESG investment products to meet increasing demand, and can inform adjustments to financial models based on improved analysis of business dependencies and impacts on climate and natural capital.

 

The Opportunity for you: Join as a co-founder

Joining DSV is a fantastic opportunity to develop concepts for and launch your own startup. Working with us, our sector-specific advisors and our current founders, you’ll have access to a completely new kind of environment for creating science-driven companies, one that does not start with university IP, but with a systematic rework of an opportunity area from first principles.

Given the current stage of the project, we expect to incorporate and spin-out the company by the end of the year to start the early tech development / proof-of-concept work in 2022.

 

Our offer

We’ll provide a competitive monthly salary while you transition out of your current role and into starting the new venture, and grant you 80% equity ownership split between you and your co-founder (compared to <49% TTO standards).

In the last couple of years we’ve built and invested in 5 brand new companies in the energy sector, both software and hardware, across high performance materials, energy storage, hydrogen and carbon capture.

 

Who should apply

Experience we’re after:

• Building models, ideally development and implementation of eco-physiological modeling, biophysical modeling, biogeochemical modeling or crop modeling (or similar)

Data science, ideally combined with agricultural engineering or environmental engineering or similar
