JOIN OUR EFFORTS TO

catalyse clean energy underground

THROUGH VENTURE.

Although the most effective way to eliminate carbon emissions would be to switch the entire energy system to solar and wind energy, huge quantities of hydrocarbons have already been discovered and will likely continue to be used as an energy source for at least the next 20 years. However to meet climate change targets, only a small fraction of the world’s oil and gas reserves can ever be exploited.

In addition to working on displacing fossil fuel energy sources (see our post on closing the carbon cycle), we urgently need to take a first principles approach to rethink how we extract, process, and utilise hydrocarbons to avoid their climate impact. Our aim is to find new ways to use these discovered hydrocarbons by catalytically processing them in the well or reservoir so that only a clean energy vector; such as hydrogen, ammonia, or other carbon-free fraction is produced to surface, thereby leaving all the environmentally damaging constituents underground.

This is an ambitious, but plausible idea. For example the Steam-Methane reforming process can produce Hydrogen from Hydrocarbons using appropriate catalysts. Also catalytic upgrading of hydrocarbons underground has also been demonstrated by the THAI-CAPRI process. This venture will look at ways these, and related processes, could be combined and any resulting CO2 separated and left underground.

In creating a genuine transition pathway for oil and gas majors it will allow them to fully decarbonise, not just their operations, but their products, within a decade or less.

OUR OFFER

Taking a Founder role at DSV is a fantastic opportunity to develop concepts for, and launch your own startup. Working with us, you’ll have access to the systems and environment to guide your thinking. We’ll provide you with a salary whilst you start your own company, and moreover, will support you build a founding team, find early data to land your first customers and to secure investors.

It’s a full time role working across market analysis, science and venture creation at DSV before incorporating your own start-up within 6 months (give or take a couple of months).

DSV will then provide pre-seed investment and help bring on board additional investors to enable your startup to conduct further research and proof-of-principle work with access to Industry through our partnership with the OGTC.

Compared to other “Entrepreneur in Residence”- type programmes, DSV is friendly to individuals with no previous founder experience and joining DSV comes with a commitment from us to support your company to make a real impact in the market. No prior idea or IP required.

PhD in Chemical Process Engineering, Electrochemistry or Materials Science / Materials Engineering, plus experience with any of:
