Venture development in Carbon negative fuels – there’s more to be done

We have already built two companies tackling fundamental problems in hydrogen and carbon capture. These basic building blocks offer an opportunity to enter the supply chain at an early stage and displace emissions and energy intensive processes. There are other high leverage intervention points both earlier and later in the production process, from the materials and processes underlying production of these building blocks to more complex alternatives that might be made more economically directly rather than through recombination.

 

AREAS WE’RE CONSIDERING

Accelerated catalysis e.g. how can we combine the latest advances in high throughput automation and data science to increase rate of catalyst discovery by 100x?

New materials design e.g. could we identify new materials in CAPEX intensive applications such as electrolysis, concentrated solar or supercritical water treatment that could lower cost and increase durability?

Waste streams to valuable chemicals – there are a huge range of waste sources that are underutilised such as glycerol, lignin, cellulose, organic wastes and many others. Could we use the energy contained within such streams to reduce the energy expenditure of performing highly energy intensive reactions such as CO2 reduction, ammonia production or hydrogen production?

Concentrated solar power – CSP is traditionally used for highly intensive reactions such as water splitting and CO2 decomposition. Could focusing on reactions with milder operational conditions overcome associated high costs, land and irradiation intensity?

Bioproduction – e.g. bioproduction of zero carbon fuels such as ammonia, hydrogen and more complex, higher value chemicals.

Other opportunities – all incoming Founding Analysts work hard to significantly expand the solution space, thus we anticipate a large number of additional approaches to be considered beyond those listed above.

 

WHO SHOULD APPLY

You bring broad technical knowledge (see below) at a Doctoral level and are comfortable exploring both theoretical and experimental challenges. You’re highly collaborative and able to think creatively to solve problems, not constrained by conventional thinking. You should be entrepreneurial, always asking why, and actively enjoy building a network around the problems and opportunities that you go after.

 

We’re looking for a candidate with experience in the following:

● Synthetic fuels

● Catalysis

● Functional materials

● Chemical engineering

● Techno economic analysis (TEA) / modelling

OUR OFFER

Taking a Founding Analyst role at DSV is a fantastic opportunity to develop concepts for, and launch your own startup. Working with us, you’ll have access to the systems and environment to guide your thinking. We’ll provide you with a salary whilst you start your own company, and moreover, will support you build a founding team, find early data to land your first customers and to secure investors.

The role transitions over time: you will initially work at DSV in an Analyst role, scoping out project opportunities and working with a dedicated Sector advisor team to identify which could become companies. After the 9 month period we will support you in taking the role of CEO or CTO of one of the companies we design together.

DSV will provide pre-seed investment and help bring on board additional investors to enable your startup to conduct further research and proof-of-principle work with access to Industry through our partnership with the OGTC

Compared to other “Entrepreneur in Residence”- type programmes, DSV is friendly to individuals with no previous founder experience and joining DSV comes with a commitment from us to support your company to make a real impact in the market. No prior idea or IP required.
