Deep Science Ventures is creating a future in which both humans and the planet can thrive.

We use our unique venture creation process to create, spin-out and invest into science companies, combining available scientific knowledge and founder-type scientists into high-impact ventures.

We operate in 4 sectors: Pharmaceuticals, Energy, Agriculture and Computation, tackling the challenges defining those areas by taking a first principles approach and partnering with leading institutions.

 

The Challenge

One of the main challenges facing carbon-neutral chemicals and fuels production is the need to discover the next generation catalysts that can improve the chemical conversion of the reactants and the production yield of the products to new levels that conventional catalysts cannot reach (overall conversion efficiency of the current catalysts in the CO2 to ethylene process ranges between 20-40%).
Nevertheless, novel catalytic innovation is a lengthy process that can take more than a decade and in some cases several decades This is because the current catalysis discovery approaches involve several trial and error steps and the most successful catalysts are often
discovered serendipitously.

 

Our approach

We aim to build an accelerated catalysis innovation platform that promises to drastically speed up environmental catalysts’ discovery. Employing this platform for the development of the next generation catalysts for currently challenging processes, such as hydrogen production and the electrochemical conversion of CO2, will drastically improve the economic and environmental benefits of such processes, and will provide a major boost to the world’s efforts in combating climate change by electrifying the hard-to-abate sectors such as the chemicals and aviation industries.

 

Join as a Co-Founder for this project

You’ll join DSV as a Co-Founder (contract, full-time) and work with us to get this project to the investment and spin-off phase (estimated time to spinout ~6 months). After the spin-out, you’ll become the CEO or the CTO of the new venture and work with your founding team + advisors + DSV + the NZTC to build this company for the next 5+ years.

 

Our offer

We provide a monthly salary (at a pre-seed stage startup level) to bridge the gap between developing the concept and getting it to an investable company stage. You and your Co-Founder(s) will own 80% of the new venture at inception and the pre-seed investment capital is already secured from both DSV and the NZTC, including access to their Clean Energy Accelerator.

 

Our impact

In the past 2 years, we have built and invested in 6 brand new companies in the energy sector across high performance materials, energy storage, green hydrogen production and carbon capture. In doing this, we have partnered with, and our companies have received funding from, the world’s leading climate-focused institutions and investors.

Previous Founders at DSV: Nick’s journey

Nick joined DSV in May 2020 to work on a carbon capture project that we were developing at  DSV at the time. He spun-out of DSV 3 months later, having co-founded a direct air capture company developing a radical new form of bio-inspired direct air capture called Mission Zero together with two other Founders that DSV had recruited.

16 months after incorporation they have:

Secured a carbon removal pre-purchase agreement with Stripe worth up to $1.5m;
Raised £250k in pre-seed and currently closing a oversubscribed seed round with top-tier climate investors;
Had their DAC pilot development funded by Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) through its inaugural DAC & GGR competition;
Participated in the Net Zero Technology centre’s (NZTC) Tech X accelerator program, winning the Equinor award;
Secured a number of commercial agreements worth multimillions including the UK’s largest offtaker of CO2.

 

Who should apply

We are looking for motivated technical innovators with deep work or academic expertise in software engineering, data science and machine learning who have been actively involved in optimising big data algorithms and training machine learning models.

Additional interest in catalysis science and carbon neutral fuels is desirable.

Needless to say that a strong desire to build a company to make a huge positive impact towards the net-zero energy transition is a must, you cannot wait to get started
